A Day in the Life of Being a Primrose Volunteer

The Bra Bar

Hello, my name is Linda, and I am proud to be a Primrose volunteer.

I first started volunteering for The Primrose Foundation in February 2023 after returning to Plymouth.

Before becoming a volunteer, I worked for the NHS for 40 years. I decided to help The Primrose Foundation as my Mum was diagnosed with breast cancer 7 years ago and was treated by the wonderful team at The Primrose Breast Care Centre – it is my way of saying thank you for looking after Mum.

In addition to volunteering for Primrose, I also volunteer one day a week at The Mustard Tree who provide support to anyone affected by cancer. I love volunteering for both organisations, it's deeply rewarding.

My main role within The Primrose Foundation is supporting events and assisting with selling the bras from the Big Bra drop campaign which the charity ran for just over 12 months to help reduce the number of ill-fitting bras many women kept in the bottom of their drawers.

I collect (we have one bra bank left in M&S Plymouth), sort and then sell them on eBay, with all the proceeds going directly to the charity.

During the end of 2024, this would generate anything between £300 - £500 a month,  which equated to around 150 parcels a month therefore it kept me super busy however now that the charity has opted to give any good quality bras for FREE to anyone that needs them I am excited to see what other projects I can help with this year.

Previously I have also been involved with coffee mornings, carol concerts and some of the larger events. I also attend community events which help raise the profile of the charity and love getting involved in events as it’s great to meet so many wonderful people who also feel very passionate about the charity.

I would highly recommend volunteering for a charity that means something to you, just a few hours a month could make a real difference.

Thank you for reading my story.

Linda
